What Are The Difficulties In Processing Titanium Alloys?

To meet the long life and high reliability requirements, more and more new standards, new technology, new materials are used; the titanium alloy has excellent mechanical properties, low density, strong corrosion resistance, making the landing gear ideal material. But at the same time, titanium alloy with high hardness and wear resistance to high processing brings a lot of challenges, especially for the cutting tool, the cutting performance of titanium alloy and lead to rapid tool wear and other processing problems occur frequently, seriously affecting the machining accuracy and efficiency. As the industry leader in the aircraft landing gear has also been deeply troubled by this problem.

   What are the difficulties in processing titanium alloys?

   First, the elastic modulus of titanium alloy is low, about 1/2 of that of steel, and it is easy to rebound on the removed surface and produce strong friction with the tool flank;

 second, it has low plasticity, high hardness, small contact area between chips and the rake face, large cutting stress, and easy wear of the tool tip and cutting edge, usually at a cutting speed of about 30 m/min; 

  third, it has high chemical activity, and at high temperature, titanium and air are easy to wear. Most of the components in the atmosphere produce strong chemical reactions, especially with oxygen and nitrogen, producing interstitial solid solution, forming a hard layer with high hardness, which has strong wear effect on cutting tools. Fourthly, the affinity is high. Because of the strong friction between chips and cutting surfaces, under the action of high cutting temperature and high cutting pressure, the titanium elements in cutting tool materials and workpiece materials interact with each other. Affinity, produce bite, stick knife, tool easy to produce bond wear.
