What Are The Functions Of Tungsten And Molybdenum Alloys?

2024-01-05 18:00:06

Tungsten molybdenum alloys can be used at higher temperatures than molybdenum or molybdenum alloys individually. If W-Mo alloy is used as electrode, nozzle and thimble component in Bohr furnace for producing high melting point refractory ceramic fiber, its service life is much longer than that of pure molybdenum product.

Mo-30W has higher corrosion resistance to zinc than other. It is widely used in zinc temperature measuring tube, zinc pump rotor and some corrosion resistant parts of zinc smelting furnace. Tungsten-molybdenum alloys can also be used in solid rocket motors such as gas rudder and guard plate because of their high melting point, good ablation resistance and flame erosion resistance of solid particles. The commonly used components are Mo 1 30W, Mo 50W and Mo 85W. Tungsten molybdenum alloy can be regarded as a transition alloy between molybdenum and tungsten. Therefore, the alloy can be applied in wide temperature range between both of them.

   Molybdenum alloy manufacturing method

There are three production methods of W-Mo alloy ingot: powder metallurgy, vacuum arc melting and vacuum electron bombardment melting.

Powder metallurgy is widely choosed because of its simplicity and the ability to obtain fine grained ingots, which is favorable for plastic processing. The main process of powder metallurgy is: mixing molybdenum and tungsten powder in proportion mechanically; pressing raw billet by mechanical press or isostatic press; sintering alloy billet in high temperature sintering furnace with hydrogen. The sintering temperature increases with the increase of tungsten content, and the sintering temperature ranges from 2150~2300 degrees. After sintering, the sintered billet is rolled or forged.
