Tantalum sheet has excellent corrosion resistance and heat resistance in vacuum. It can be used as a chemical anticorrosion material and also as a heating material in a high-temperature vacuum furnace. However, it is not resistant to oxidation in atmospheric environment, and oxidation starts at over 400 degrees!

So when wrapped in tantalum chips, tantalum absorbs oxygen, and to some extent protects my samples from oxidation.
